What is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)?
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is an innovative European Union policy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting fair trade. It imposes a levy on imports of certain high-carbon goods—such as steel, cement, aluminum, fertilizers, and electricity—preventing the relocation of emissions outside the EU while encouraging global producers to adopt more sustainable practices. Implemented in a transitional phase since October 2023, CBAM will fully take effect by 2026, requiring importers to report and pay for embedded carbon emissions. This mechanism is a vital step toward aligning climate goals with international market dynamics, ensuring a level playing field for EU businesses committed to sustainability.
